After all my years of producing newscasts and TV segments, I got the opportunity to be on the other side of the camera to do a live TV interview. It happened when I co-authored a book called “Lyin’ Cheatin’ Bastards” which featured the top political scandals in the U.S. from 2000. I appeared on the WGN Morning News with the book’s editor in a 5 minute interview to talk about Illinois’ top bastards.
While I had coached hundreds of guests for TV segments, it’s a little different prepping yourself. But I followed the same process I used with talent and guests over the years. I reviewed my material and I practiced answering questions with my colleagues until I could handle just about anything they threw at me. Now, it was a little easier for me since I had worked on WGN’s morning show and knew the anchors, Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten. I was still a little nervous but knew I was in good hands. I was able to have fun with the segment, respond quickly to questions and still share thoughtful information.
